Former NFL teams

In its earliest years, the NFL was a very unstable and somewhat informal organization. Many teams entered and left the league annually. However, since the acquisition of the All-America Football Conference in 1950, the NFL has shown nearly perfect stability. The last NFL team to fold was the Dallas Texans in 1952 (a team that had undergone numerous ownership and city changes since its founding as the Dayton Triangles in 1920); its remnants were salvaged to form what is now the Indianapolis Colts.
